A woman from Kavunzoni village, Midoina location in Ganze district succumbed to death while another is in critical condition after being attacked by a herd of elephants yesterday.

The two, who were on the way to fetch water, were attacked by a herd of three elephants and their calves at 6am. Good samaritans who took the two to Bamba Sub-District Hospital said the elephants left them unconscious. They were rescued by charcoal dealers who had gone to buy charcoal in the area.

Confirming the incident, Ganze DC Ibrahim Abdi Diba said Chana Kenga died on her way to Bamba Sub-District Hospital, which is about 70 kilometrs from the scene of the attack, while the other woman, Kabibi Kenga, was referred to Kilifi District Hospital in a critical condition. Diba said the animals escaped from Tsavo National Park to look for water. "The conflict between the animals and human beings is brought by water scarcity in the parks especially during the dry season," Diba said.

The administrator advised people to stay in their houses especially when it is dark to avoid being attacked by animals. "The animals walk around at night. I advise the residents to avoid walking late in the night and early in the morning. They should start their businesses from 10am to avoid being attacked," he said.
