We understand that our work must be more than protecting space and species. It must have broad economic and social development components that provide tangible benefits for people living with wildlife. People will join the fight against poaching when they see that an elephant is worth more to them alive than dead. Farmers respect boundaries between their fields and wild habitat when they benefit more from wildlife. Governments prioritise conservation when it takes its place alongside other major national industries.
Sooner or later, a decision must be made about how to use every acre of land. Conservation can drive enterprise in remote areas, provide livelihoods, pay for schools or clinics, and bring visitors. We must demonstrate the value that conserving that space for wildlife can bring, and prove that this is the better deal in the long-run.
