conservation INVESTMENT

From rainforests to deserts, marine areas to dry savannahs, Africa is home to some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. However, these natural landscapes are under threat. Rapid population and economic growth both pose challenges to the integrity of wild spaces.

There is a critical need for a nature-based approach to funding in order to support both humans and wildlife, allowing them to coexist and benefit from this relationship.

For many countries, the cost of maintaining and enhancing ecosystems is often beyond the resources that are available and many governments are forced to choose between short-term economic gain and long-term conservation goals. Through the utilisation of natural landscapes as investment opportunities, we can support natural landscapes whilst creating value for governments and by extension, the people.

The conservation investment programme unlocks flows of revenue and capacity to under-resourced landscapes. This also helps local citizens who depend on these areas to survive alongside the biodiversity. We assist national governments to build their country's nature-based economy through our conservation investment platform that seeks to transform protected areas into engines for revenue generation.

How do we do this?

Our approach to this can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Supporting at policy level by developing solutions such as policy reform and leveraging the Giants Club to secure political will. This makes it possible to overcome barriers to responsible investments in the nature-based economy.

  2. Supporting at a National level by defining conservation and tourism investment opportunities in key protected areas. Key components of this include capacity building, addressing governance structures, development plans, and marketing plans as well as leveraging on existing Space for Giants portfolio of services and expertise.

  3. Supporting at a protected area level by directly investing in protected areas to unlock wildlife, biodiversity, tourism and enterprise opportunities to achieve sustainable development.

“ANAC is delighted with the progress made under this collaboration, highly valuing its partnership with Space for Giants, who have added huge value in achieving the objectives of the Business Unit and thus contribute to pave the way to build a sustainable and robust conservation economy in Mozambique."

Director General, Administração Nacional das Áreas de Conservação  Mozambique
